This flow of interest and investment, starting in the 1960s, has played an integral part in the development of the Cayman Islands as an offshore centre highly ranked in the international business community. The growth continues at a steady pace, with over 4,000 new companies registered in a typical year. Many people from many countries have found the advantages of basing their business operations in the Cayman Islands - a fact shown by the approximately 40,000 companies listed on the Islands' Registry of Companies in 1998.
The registration and control of companies is governed by the Companies Law (Cap. 22) (R), originally enacted in 1961 but revised in 1994, with several sets of regulations. Its administration under the Financial Secretary, is conducted by the Registrar of Companies. Computerization has enabled the efficiency of the registry to be increased so that it is now possible for new companies to be processed for registration within two working days. With such quick processing, the specialist firms which handle company registrations no longer feel it necessary to have "shelf" companies registered for ready acquisition by new clients.
