Cayman Island Weddings: What you need to know

The Cayman Islands provide the ideal wedding destination.  There are superb locations and facilities that can cater for every kind of wedding, and within every price range.  Whether you are planning a sumptuous event with hundreds of guests in a luxury hotel or an intimate event, you will easily find the perfect location to fulfil your dreams of a tropical wedding in paradise.

The three islands all have a superfluity of picture-perfect locations providing the ideal natural backdrop from which to exchange your vows, both inland and on the beach.  If you would prefer your ceremony to be indoors, many of the hotels and restaurants can arrange a private area for your party and there are any number of churches to choose from.  Even unconventional weddings, such as an underwater scuba wedding, can be catered for.  Every last detail can be arranged either by yourselves, or dedicated professionals, and your ceremony will be limited only by your own imagination.   If you have organised your plans it is even possible to get married on a one-day visit!

The Caribbean is famed for its’ balmy climate and welcoming people and the Cayman Islands provides no exception to this rule.  Daytime weddings will be heralded by skies of the richest blue, tranquil waters twinkling in the sunshine and a slight breeze. People who opt for a sunset ceremony will benefit from a dazzling technicolor sky show as the sun fades on the horizon and evening weddings will take place beneath the dazzling stars and benefit from a slightly cooler temperature.

In addition to be able to host the grand event, hotels and restaurants will gladly cater for your after-party; many of them can provide catering services away from their premises so if you have a particular menu in mind, or a favourite restaurant speak with the manager and see what they can do.

For weddings on the beach or at a private home it is possible to hire all the ‘props’ you could possibly need from one of the reliable party companies on the island.  There are many professional musicians on the island you can hire to create the perfect ambience for your wedding ranging from a classical quartet to local bands performing everything from steel pan to soca.  Professional photo and videographers are also available here and you can even have your wedding screened live over the internet for friends and family who were unable to come but would dearly love to share in your happy moment.  Remember that if you are getting married on the shared grounds of a condo or complex to gain written permission from the board in advance.

The Cayman Islands really do provide an ideal backdrop for the tropical wedding you and your fiancée have always dreamed of.  Once the all-important details for your wedding have been worked out, remember that to complete your nuptials in the Cayman Islands you must obtain:

  • A marriage licence (currently US$200.00 for non-residents)
  • A letter from the authorized Marriage Officer who will be officiating your ceremony

These can both be obtained from Deputy Chief Secretary’s Office (phone: 345-949-7900 or 345-914-2222)

You will also need to provide evidence of:

  • Two witnesses at the ceremony
  • Proof of citizenship
  • Proof of age (without parental consent 18 is the minimum legal age)
  • Proof of marital status where applicable
  • For cruise ship visitors, present the Cayman Islands Immigration Department entry slips (pink) or other relevant documents which prove you are cruise ship passengers visiting for the day
